Welcome to the WWF Arctic Blog.

After two nights at a sheltered anchorage in Strathcona Sound we ventured out once more, hoping that the winds in Admiralty Inlet had died down sufficiently for comfortable sailing. And indeed they had – the waves were much more subdued than when we’d attempted the passage a few days ago, upon leaving Arctic Bay.

Arctic Bay was our first community since leaving Grise Fiord a week ago. It was time to resupply with fuel, water and fresh meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. We also took this opportunity to meet people in the community to learn about the latest news.

For the past few days we’ve been exploring Lancaster Sound, the eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage.

Resolute Bay and Grise Fiord are Canada’s northernmost communities, with Grise sitting at 76 degrees North.

From the iceberg to the glacier and back, from the iceberg to the glacier and back – for the past day and a half we made a groove in the ocean off Canada’s Ellesmere Island.

The boat strained at the anchor, as gust after gust ripped off the cliffs and slammed rain into the windows. For almost two days that had been our view at the sheltered Anchorage north of Qaanaaq.

One of the Arctic Tern’s mascots made a long journey just to join us here.

Here the wait begins for the crew – waiting for the wind to die down, and ideally the sea too, so we can leave.
